Lacrosse is a fast-paced, exciting sport that requires players to be properly equipped for both safety and performance. Whether your child is new to lacrosse or returning for another season, having the right gear is crucial. Below is a comprehensive guide to the essential equipment every lacrosse player needs, along with some recommendations on where to purchase these items in Northern Virginia and online.
Required Lacrosse Gear
1. Lacrosse Stick (Crosse)
The lacrosse stick is the most important piece of equipment. It consists of a head and a shaft and comes in different sizes depending on the player’s position:
- Attack/Midfield: Shorter sticks (40-42 inches) for better ball control and maneuverability.
- Defense: Longer sticks (52-72 inches) for extended reach. Allowed for 12U and older
- Goalie: Specially designed sticks with a larger head for blocking shots.
Look for sticks appropriate for your child’s age, position, and skill level.
One often overlooked aspect of a stick is the pocket. If you find a used stick or have one at home from an older sibling, making sure its ready for play is a good idea. Our coaches can evaluate your pocket and make adjustments if needed.
2. Helmet
A lacrosse-specific helmet is mandatory for boys’ lacrosse. Helmets are designed with a face mask and chin strap to protect players from high-speed impacts. Make sure the helmet fits snugly and is certified by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE).
3. Mouthguard
Mouthguards protect players from dental injuries and are required for all players during practices and games. Many leagues specify that the mouthguard must be colored (not clear) and attached to the helmet.
4. Shoulder Pads
Shoulder pads provide vital protection for the chest and shoulders. Since 2022, all shoulder pads must meet the NOCSAE ND200 standard to help protect against commotio cordis (a rare but serious heart injury). Ensure that the shoulder pads fit properly and meet this requirement.
5. Elbow Pads
Elbow pads shield the elbows and arms from bumps and inadvertent checks / hits, especially for attack and midfield players who are more likely to be targeted.
6. Gloves
Lacrosse gloves are designed to protect the hands while allowing for flexibility and grip. Look for gloves with reinforced padding and breathable materials.
7. Protective Cup
A protective athletic cup is mandatory for all male lacrosse players to guard against injury.
8. Cleats
Lacrosse cleats provide the traction needed for quick movements on grass or turf fields. Cleats should be specific to lacrosse or a comparable sport like football or soccer.
9. Goalie-Specific Equipment
If your athlete does choose to play goalie, there is other versions of the gear described above that is made specifically for goalies. The piece of required additional equipment is a throat guard and a goalie-specific stick. HRYL has goalie gear available for each team so purchasing your own goalie gear is only required if your athlete has fully committed to the position.
