As we work to build strong, versatile athletes in our community, it’s clear that wrestling is a fantastic complement to lacrosse. We’re thrilled to support the Herndon Reston Wrestling Association (HRWA) or Hawks Wrestling, a dedicated local nonprofit that’s on a mission to help young athletes develop key skills through the sport of wrestling. The new season runs from November 2024 to February 2025, and registration is open now!

Equipment Needed
A wrestler’s essentials include headgear, wrestling shoes, and a uniform for matches.
- HRWA has informal programs where families can donate or swap gently-used equipment, so you won’t need to invest in everything upfront.
Why Wrestling is Great for Lacrosse Players
While lacrosse is a team sport emphasizing agility and coordination, wrestling offers unique benefits that strengthen athletes individually:
- Self-Discipline: Wrestling requires mental and physical self-control, which is vital on the mat and translates directly to focus and stamina on the lacrosse field.
- Confidence and Leadership: HRWA emphasizes personal growth. Wrestling builds the courage and confidence young athletes need to take on challenges in both solo and team environments.
- Strength and Agility: Wrestling practices develop full-body strength, balance, and speed, which are critical in lacrosse for quick changes of direction, sprints, and powerful shots.
- Sportsmanship and Accountability: HRWA teaches young athletes to respect opponents, win humbly, and take responsibility for their actions—values we also hold in high regard at HRYL.
For more updates, follow HRWA on Facebook and Instagram. Let’s rally around this great local program and get our young athletes involved!
This program is not affiliated with The Herndon Optimist Club (HOC) but many HRYL families have participated in this program in the past.
