Welcome to the exciting world of youth lacrosse! If you’re a parent with a child stepping into this dynamic sport, you might have a few questions or concerns. Fear not! This guide is here to walk you through what to expect, how to best support your child, and the importance of positive encouragement in the journey of youth lacrosse.
What is Youth Lacrosse?
Lacrosse, often referred to as the fastest game on two feet, combines elements of basketball, soccer, and hockey. It’s a team sport that requires skill, strategy, and athleticism. In youth lacrosse, the focus is on skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and having fun.
Getting Started: The Basics
Equipment and Gear
Your child will need a lacrosse stick, helmet (boys), protective eyewear (girls), mouthguard, and appropriate footwear. Boys will also require shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves and a cup.
Understanding the Game
Lacrosse has unique rules and gameplay. Familiarize yourself with the basics, like how the game is played, field layout, player positions, and scoring. This knowledge will not only help you appreciate the game more but also support your child in learning.
Supporting Your Young Athlete
Be Their Cheerleader
Positive reinforcement goes a long way. Attend games and practices, cheer for the team, and celebrate your child’s efforts, not just the outcomes. Consider volunteering, no experience is needed.
Emphasize Sportsmanship
Encourage your child to play by the rules and respect coaches, teammates, and opponents. The Herndon Reston Youth Lacrosse (HRYL) emphasizes sportsmanship, fair play, and respect among all participants, as outlined in our Code of Conduct.
Focus on Skill Development
Youth lacrosse is about developing skills and a love for the game. Encourage your child to focus on improving their skills and understanding of the game, rather than just winning. We recommend promoting 30mins of Wallball each day. Also consider playing catch with your child each morning for 10mins before school.
Navigating Practices and Games
Consistency is Key
Ensure your child attends practices regularly and arrives on time (15 mins earlier is on time for practice, provides time for putting gear on). This consistency is crucial for their development and team cohesion.
Healthy Habits
Promote a healthy lifestyle with balanced nutrition, adequate sleep, and proper hydration, which are essential for young athletes.
Open Communication
Maintain open lines of communication with coaches and support staff. They are there to help your child grow and can offer valuable insights into their development.
The Role of Parents in HRYL
Volunteer
As a volunteer-driven organization, HRYL thrives on parental involvement. Whether it’s helping with team logistics or participating in club events, your involvement is invaluable. Click here to learn more.
Positive Sideline Behavior
Remember, your behavior on the sidelines reflects on the team and the club. Support all players and respect officials’ decisions, embodying the spirit of the HRYL Code of Conduct.
Foster a Community Spirit
Encourage your child to bond with their teammates outside of lacrosse. Team gatherings or attending lacrosse events can enhance team spirit and camaraderie.
The Bigger Picture
Remember, youth lacrosse is not just about playing a sport; it’s about learning life skills. Through lacrosse, your child can develop discipline, teamwork, leadership, and resilience. Encourage them to enjoy the game, learn from their experiences, and most importantly, have fun.
Welcome to the HRYL family! We are thrilled to have you and your young athlete as part of our community. Here’s to a fantastic lacrosse season filled with growth, learning, and joy.
