Fall is a great time for players to stay active, build skills, and keep a stick in their hands — even outside of the spring season. Whether your player is brand new to the sport or looking to sharpen their game in a low-pressure environment, there are several local, non-travel lacrosse options available this fall for Kindergarten through 8th grade boys.

🔷 McLean Youth Lacrosse – Fall Box League

One of the standout fall programs we’ve seen is the McLean Youth Lacrosse Fall Box League. It’s a fun, fast-paced indoor league that emphasizes quick decision-making, stick skills, and tight-space play through small-sided games.

While it’s been about three years since my family last had players participate, it was a very positive experience — well organized, low stress, and a lot of fun for the kids. It’s designed to welcome players of all skill levels, making it a great fit for both beginners and more experienced athletes looking to get extra touches in the offseason.

👉 Check out McLean Box League here

🟢 HRYL New Player Fall Clinic

For those just starting out, HRYL runs a New Player Clinic in the fall. This is a short-format program (typically three Saturday sessions, each 1.5 hours) focused on basic skills like cradling, passing, catching, and shooting — all in a no-contact, welcoming environment. Equipment can be borrowed, and it’s a great way to introduce younger players to the game in a low-key setting.

🔗 More Local Fall Programs to Explore

Here are additional recreational programs in the Northern Virginia area offering non-travel, fall lacrosse opportunities for K–8 players:

If you have any questions or would like help figuring out which option might be the best fit for your player, feel free to reach out. We’re happy to help point you in the right direction! Please remember each program is only as good as the volunteers running it and families participating in them so please do you research as quality can change from year to year.

Since 2017, Coach Jeff Marschner has been a bedrock of the HRYL program—guiding teams, building players, and elevating Herndon-Reston lacrosse to new heights. As he steps away from the sidelines, we celebrate a remarkable tenure that reflects his tireless commitment, humility, and competitive spirit.

Coach Jeff never had a losing season—a testament not just to his lacrosse acumen but to his ability to inspire excellence in every player who wore the jersey. Over the years, he compiled an impressive 41-11 record as a head and assistant coach, with a particularly dominant run at the 14U level and a legacy that includes three 14U Championship titles.

His dedication extended far beyond spring lacrosse. Jeff coached in both the Fall Brawl and Middle School Fall League, consistently shaping teams that were tough, disciplined, and respectful—living examples of the HRYL Code of Conduct. His impact was perhaps most personal while coaching his son, Mike Marschner, a standout athlete on the VLC 2029 team and a Nike All-Star selection with Team DMV.

Coach Marschner would be the first to credit his coaching peers. Over the years, he collaborated with and learned from an outstanding bench of assistants and fellow coaches, including Brian Legler, Kevin Dunn, Josh Anderson, John Damm, Craig Atkins, Eric Kaiser, Scott Kelly, Dez Stewart, Ian Thompson, and Carl Cassani. Together, they built a culture of trust, discipline, and joy in the game.

Jeff’s legacy at HRYL is one of excellence—marked not just by wins, but by the countless players he mentored, the families he supported, and the example he set. His presence will be deeply missed on game days, but his impact will continue to shape HRYL for seasons to come.

Thank you, Coach Jeff, for everything.

At Herndon-Reston Youth Lacrosse (HRYL), we believe that the true spirit of lacrosse extends far beyond the scoreboard. That’s why we’re proud to support the Northern Virginia Youth Lacrosse League’s (NVYLL) “Honor the Game”initiative—a pilot program focused on recognizing sportsmanship, respect, and integrity in youth lacrosse.

This program is not about the fastest, strongest, or highest-scoring player. It’s about spotlighting those who elevate the game through positive actions—encouraging teammates, respecting opponents, helping others up, and playing with heart and humility. After each game, coaches from each team select one player from the opposing side who best exemplifies these values. That player receives an “Honor the Game” Challenge Coin—a symbol of character, community, and commitment to the spirit of the sport.

This season, we’re proud to highlight Ben Ferrara (Attack/Midfield) from HRYL and Logan Beck (Goalie) from Gainesville as our latest honorees. Both athletes demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship and class throughout the game—uplifting teammates, engaging respectfully with opponents, and showing what it means to truly “Honor the Game.”

As outlined in the HRYL Code of Conduct, our entire community—players, coaches, and parents—is expected to embody respect, teamwork, and exemplary conduct both on and off the field. This new NVYLL initiative reinforces those values, helping ensure that youth lacrosse remains fun, inclusive, and rewarding for all.

So next time you’re on the sidelines, remember: sportsmanship is contagious. Let’s keep lacrosse fun. Let’s keep honoring the game.

Hey HRYL families — most of you have a rare bye weekend coming up, and that means no games for our players. But just because we’re not taking the field doesn’t mean the learning stops!

One of the best ways for young athletes to grow their lacrosse IQ is by watching the game at the highest level. Whether it’s picking up on stick skills, off-ball movement, defensive positioning, or team communication, there’s so much to learn just by observing.

This weekend, we’ve got two incredible college matchups that we think every HRYL player should tune in for:

🚗 Road Trip Ready: Maryland vs. Rutgers (College Park, MD)

  • When: Saturday, April 20, 2025
  • Where: SECU Stadium, University of Maryland
  • Who: No. 5 Maryland vs. Rutgers
  • Watch: BTN / Streaming via Big Ten+
  • Why You Should Go:
This one’s local — close enough for a quick drive and a perfect chance to catch elite D1 lacrosse in person. Maryland is one of the most storied programs in the country, and their high-tempo style is something our players can really learn from. Grab some teammates, bring your sticks, and take in the atmosphere!

📺 Can’t-Miss Clash: Harvard vs. No. 1 Cornell

  • When: Saturday, April 20, 2025
  • Where: Harvard Stadium (Watch from home!)
  • Who: No. 10 Harvard vs. No. 1 Cornell
  • Watch: ESPNU / ESPN+
  • Why You Should Watch:
Top-10 showdown? Check. Ivy League rivalry? Check. National Championship implications? Absolutely. Cornell’s offense is lights out, and Harvard’s defense is no joke. Watching this kind of game gives players a front-row seat to elite-level execution and effort.

✅ Coach’s Challenge

We challenge every HRYL player to watch at least one full college game this weekend — not just for entertainment, but to study the game. Look at the off-ball movement. Pay attention to how defenders communicate. Watch how teams clear and ride.

Then, come back next week ready to talk about what you learned.

Let’s raise our lacrosse IQ and continue to grow — even on our off days!

If you’ve been around the lacrosse world for more than a minute, you’ve probably heard the phrase: “Hit the wall.” It’s not just a phrase—it’s a mindset. Whether you’re brand new to the sport or you’re dreaming of varsity or college ball, Wall Ball should be a core part of your training.

🧱 What Is Wall Ball?

Wall Ball is one of the simplest, most effective training tools a lacrosse player can use. All you need is a lacrosse stick, a ball, and—you guessed it—a wall. The idea is to pass the ball against the wall repeatedly, simulating in-game stick skills like passing, catching, quick sticks, ground balls, and more.

It might not look flashy on social media, but Wall Ball builds the foundation of your game.

🚀 Why Wall Ball Matters

1. Reps Build Muscle Memory

Wall Ball helps players get hundreds of touches in a short period of time. The more reps you get, the more natural your stick skills become under pressure.

2. Ambidexterity Is Everything

Want to make your coach smile? Be just as dangerous with your off-hand as your strong hand. Wall Ball forces you to develop both sides, making you a more complete and unpredictable player.

3. Confidence Booster

There’s nothing better than knowing your stick is an extension of your body. When you know you can catch any pass and deliver a crisp feed under pressure, your game transforms.

4. Portable & Year-Round

Can’t make practice? Traveling? Bad weather? No excuses. A wall is always available—at school, at home, even at parks or gyms. Wall Ball goes where you go.

5. It’s a Competitive Edge

Wall Ball is the great separator. Every player can do it—but not every player does. If you make it part of your weekly routine, you’ll be ahead of 90% of your competition.

🎥 Wall Ball Routines You Should Try

Here are a few excellent Wall Ball routines on YouTube to guide your training:

🏁 Final Word: Hit the Wall

Wall Ball isn’t just extra credit—it’s essential. Build it into your weekly routine (3–5x/week is ideal). Set a timer, mix in both hands, and challenge yourself with faster reps or fewer drops. It’s how good players become great players.

So the next time someone asks how to get better at lacrosse, tell them the truth:

“I just hit the wall.”
